Noise/Compression on HPX170

I shoot a lot of interviews with my HPX170. I know that there is a ton of noice/compression (one or the other, or both) hiding at certain levels and/or colors. I recently shot two interviews. One had a "busy" background that was fairly well lit. The noise is either less, or less noticiable. The other interview was a solid brown, background at aproximately 25% (on my FCP waveform).

Does anyone know the range that noise or compression shows up the most. If I have a solid background in the future, is there a certain IRE or color to avoid? Or am I screwed with any solid background?

Thanks,
Thatcher

Let's see are you using gain, detail or skin tone detail or perhaps underexposing a bit? All of those things add noise.

I use -3 detail. No skin detail. No gain. I expose correctly (aka I don't raise anything in post). I know that there is a certain amount of noise that comes with a cheap camera. I know that the noise is held in certain colors and levels. Blue is always noisier, and the noise is in the lower IRE. But I'm wondering if anyone knows specific numbers for this camera.

Thanks,
Thatcher

Do you have the Dynamic Range Stretch on. If you don't need it, the function will still be working and it can make your footage noisy.

Turn coring up to +2, B Press gamma is quieter than Cine D or even V.
Do not boost chroma/saturation above 0. DVCPRO HD will have its own set of artifacts on flat, low IRE fields, independent of the camera.
