can no longer view video thumbnails
on Jan 26, 2009 at 7:16:47 pm

I recently had a computer crash and I'm in the process of reinstalling everything on my hard drive. I've just updated all of the P2 firmware, but I'm having a problem. When I download a P2 card to my computer (using Shotput) I use to be able to view the video thumbnails in the finder. I found this to be a great way to do a quick check of the footage. Unfortunately now when I click on the video folder, it just shows that they are MXF files, but I can't view them. I have FCP 6.04 and Quicktime 7.5.5 installed, and I'm running Mac OS 10.5.6. It seem like there is some sort of plug-in that I'm missing, but I'm not sure what.

Perhaps you're forgetting P2CMS?

I have P2CMS installed and I can view the cards if I ingest them into that program, but I use to be able to just view the thumbnails as video. That's what I'm trying to get back.

If you select an MXF in the VIDEO folder, right click and choose, Open With > Quicktime, it doesn't work?

No, that works no problem. The problem is prior to my computer crash, the thumbnail itself was a video that I could play in the finder without having to open anything. But for some reason I can't do that anymore.

Okay, now that we know it works, get info on one of the .MXF clips and then change the 'open with' application to Quicktime and hit Change All. in this screen grab it's greyed out as that option is selected already:

Ok, I changed the settings to always open with quicktime, but still no video thumbnail (preview). I tried to put a screen grab up, but unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to upload it onto the post.
But so far I've done everything you've said and it all works. I just don't have the video preview in the finder.

Have you clicked the little arrow down so that you can see the preview?

Yes, the little arrow is clicked down. One difference between what I see on my computer and yours is that your .MXF files have picture icons with them, as does the preview. On my computer instead of a picture I see the grey .MXF icon (like you see when you hit "get info"). That seems to be my problem.

Thanks for all of you help.

Can you please upload a screen grab?

Take the screen grab, click the little camera looking button, then click 'Choose File', then click 'Upload Image', then click the image once it's uploaded and copy and paste the 'embed' or 'link' link into this message.

Can you please give me a screen grab of your HardDrive > Library > Quicktime folder?

I'm a fool.

Did you have MXF4mac or Calibrated installed on your machine before?

Honestly, I'm not sure. Do I need one of those?

Now that I think about it yes, I think you do need one of those to look at files in the finder like that. You would have paid for either one of them.

I have MXF4mac so that's why I can see it.

Funny, but after looking at both the MXF4Mac and Calibrated websites, I don't remember ever downloading and (especially) paying for either program. I'm sure I had some free plug-in, I just don't know what it was. Oh well, I guess I'll just take the extra step and open the files up in either quicktime or P2CMS.
Thanks

Could this be an OSX viewing preference?

I'm on an older OS here so I can't check until later, but aren't there options as to whether the finder shows thumbnails or generic icons?

Hi Kara,

you see the "MXF4QT Import.component" file? That's from us, maybe you downloaded the free demo. If not maybe you have a full version that has expired because it was not activated.

You can send me the file and I will check this out for you.

Thanks
Bjoern

Are those MXFs AVC-Intra clips? In this case you also need the AVC-I decoder from Panasonic.

No, they are coming from my HVX200, so no AVC-Intra. The mystery continues.

How did you re-install your system after the crash?

I had cloned my hard drive back in May, so I used Migration Assistant to load from my external drive. It didn't work that great though. The programs all imported fine, but things like pictures and music all had to be moved over by hand. I've looked in the HD-Library-Quicktime from my old back up, and everything is the same same as the new drive. The biggest difference is that my old drive was OS 10.4.11, and when I got the computer back from Apple it had 10.5.5 on it.

It sounds the 10.4. restore on your 10.5 system messed some things up.

You should install the entire system from scratch. Initialize the hard disk when installing the new system so all old data gets deleted.

I'm not to keen on doing that, as I don't have the OS 10.5 disk to install from and I don't want to go back to OS 10.4. I can still open the files via quicktime or P2CMS so it's not that big of a deal. Just one extra step.

I doubt you will notice more problems when you keep working with this system.
