Need help ASAP cause we're ordering tomorrow!! Here is our situation: We are making the move to P2 and shooting about 32 to 40 hours of footage next week, basically run and gun but bringing a crew member to offload p2 cards to hard drive. This is a two camera shoot by the way so there will be several p2 cards flying around.
We're trying to figure out the best system to do this on the run yet still get redundant (if possible) verified backup while in the field. We were about to settle on the PCD20 card reader when I started seeing thread for the Duel adapter. Yes, we are using a macbook pro. What are your opinions? Can the card reader copy over more than one p2 card at a time using offload software (I think we're getting ShotPut p2)? Is it best to get separate hard drives or a raid1?
Definitely the PCD20 if you can afford to buy one or rent it. Folks talk about crashes with the Duel all the time and at the end of the day it's only one slot vs. 5 on the 20. Much more simple workflow.
but then we also have a cheap two drive enclosure from StorTech or StarTech (I can't remember) that we run JBOD and use Shotput Pro to offload the p2 cards to two drives simultaneously (it can handle up to three if you have them). That way those two sata drives eventually become the archive as sata drives on the shelf. Right now we have about 19 or 20 TB of storage sitting on the shelf in duped SATA drives. We are waiting for the right option for longer term, more safe and relatively cost effective storage to come along, but it hasn't hit us over the head yet.
ALso in a pinch we use a weibetech fw800 to SATA converter that allows us to attach bare sata drives to it. No enclosure necessary.
