Import Video only to FCP from P2 File??
on Dec 20, 2008 at 12:03:48 am

My client brought several P2 Cards worth of footage to me on a hard drive.

Unfortunately, one of the "CONTENTS" folders is missing the "AUDIO" folder. So FCP refuses to view anything from the card.

Fortunately, most of this card is B-Roll, making the audio much less important than the video.

So my question is: Is it possible to get the video files, which DO exist, from the file? How can I import the video minus audio, into FCP?

Or is there any way to convert the MFX video files to MOV video files?

I appreciate your help. My client REALLY appreciates your help.

Video only is very simple and fast when using our MXF4QT Import solution. You just need to drag the VIDEO folder into FCP. MXF4QT enables QuickTime and FC Studio applications to read the native MXF files without converting them to MOV.

When you use Log and Transfer than you need to deselect audio for every single clip.

FCP won't even recognize the card if the full card structure is not intact. Missing a folder and those files, and FCP won't even see the card.

MXF4QT or Raylight or Calibrated software will allow you to import the raw video files. Heck, even if you install P2CMS (free) that installs an MXF QT component that allows direct import of MXF. The benefit of the others is that they tie audio and video. But you don't need that in this case. So worth a shot.

The Panasonic component that comes with P2CMS also doesn't support timecode.

If you are dead set on using FCP and don't want to go to the effort of doing what is suggested, then just create a folder "AUDIO" and drop that into the contents folder. FCP is just looking for the correct file structure for the MXF files.

Guys, thanks so much for your input.

Luckily, by just creating a dummy "AUDIO" folder and dropping it into the main folder, I was able to view the thumbnails in FCP. This was the point where I discovered there was a copy of the P2 file, but with a different name and including the "AUDIO" folder.

So it turned out to be a Merry Christmas for my client after all.

Thanks again, buds.
