hvx 200 1080i 24 P -- how do i make this progressive?
on Nov 20, 2008 at 10:08:06 am

hello,

thanks for your help in the past!

i made a big mistake. i am shooting a short i hope will be accepted by film festivals.

i am shooting in 1080i 24p (not advanced) importing into final cut.

you showed me the steps i need to take to get it to be 23.976. but i realized at a festival, it would be better as true progressive. do you know the steps to go from 1080i 24p to a true progressive 24p?

i realize now the format to shoot in in 720 24pn. i wish i had realized that a long time ago.

thanks,
jaenet

720p (progressive). 1080i (interlaced). If you want 720p24, you will need to downconvert.

Your 1080i24 is 24fps (23.976) not 24p (progressive).

Steve what are you smoking....

the 1080 23.98 format is called a progressive segmented frame -- it Always displays the progressive capture as interlace for playback but the image is indeed progressive.

FYI Jaenet -- video at 23.98 is considered 24p (and that is NOT 24.0

You need to perform a reverse telecine on your footage to get your 1080i29.97 (Shot 24p with pulldown) to 1080psf23.98. Compressor offers this function and you can do it as a batch.

Hi, I shot stock footage for a client on the Panasonic HVX200. The client requested that I shoot it with
the 1080/24p format, which on that camera it is called 1080i/24p. (I did NOT shoot it on 1080i/24padvanced) The client's editor downloaded the footage off the P2 cards (I downloaded a safety copy of directly off of the P2 card of my own)

The client called me and said that the footage was not 24P and that they can't use it.

I know this is a common problem. (I also have the HVX book by Barry Green which explains that on the HVX200, the 1080i/24p format has 24 progresive frames embedded in the 60 interlace video screen and that these can be retrieved in post production)

How do I explain to the client's editor that the 1080/24P footage is indeed there and how they can retrieve it?

Thanks

William Poznanski

They have to do a reverse telecine. Compressor offers this as an option which can be done in batches with the proper setup, or you can remove the pulldown clip by clip in Cinema Tools.

How do you plan to deliver your film to the festival - and by extension do you really need a true progressive scan movie at 23.98?
