Std Def: SDX 900
on Nov 7, 2008 at 9:40:38 am

With an eye to purchase, I have had a good read of the Panasonic SDX900 literature. However, unlike the HDX900, I understand the SDX900 doesn't have firewire so I wonder how I get my footage out of it and into my Mac G5.

Thank you for being so kind as to answer what must be an elementary question. Also, I apologise for posting in this forum but it seems to be the closest to being appropriate.

YOu rent a DVCPRO HD (AJ-HD1200 or 1400) or DVCPRO 50 deck and use that to play the tapes. RARELY would you use the camera...if at all.

The DV50 deck you need is the AJ-SD93. It does not do inset assemble edits, though, if you need to frame accurately master BACK to dv50.

It will be cheaper and less complicated then renting an HD deck.

SDX900 is a great great SD camera- of its day. But with the amount of quality HD cameras in Panasonic's product range today it would have to be just a smoking deal to go for it. What's the deal?

Hi Noah,

The deal is $7,000, inclusive of SDI board. It is a low mileage late 2005 model. I started my search looking for a HDX900 but their used values remain very high.

OMG- yeah that is a good deal. I think that camera was around 25K new. Yeah if you're strictly standard definition and you've got a great lens to go with it that's a solid deal. But again we're moving into HD hard core in most production worlds. You might well be the SDX's final master.

Hi Noah, Thank you for okaying my deal. I come from the stills world of Nikon, Canon & Mamiya RZ67 II and am thoroughly inexperienced with camcorders. I've only recently figured-out that 5mm is a wide lens. So it was nice to receive your thought that I hadn't been overcharged. It was even nicer to see that you have been an SDX900 user - I enjoyed reading your Formosa article here on COW.
