First, thank you for taking the time to read this post.

I am going to be getting P2 footage shot in HD 720p 24pn, shot on a HVX200. This is a music video so the talent's lips need to match the CD we are using for playback on set. I am editing in FCP 5.4.1. Is there a workflow somebody could share with me so I have some hair left on my head at the end of this project?

I am concerned with sequence settings, so I edit in 24pn and that the CD audio matches his lips in the editor. Is this even possible?

Also, is there any special prep-work needed in DVDSP in the DVD encode process when working with 24pn?

As you can see I am a newbie at this and I know you guys have a great pool on professionals that know your stuff and I will greatly appreciate any input.

Thank you,

Derek

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you shot normal speed- any slow motion or fast motion would need to be resynced by hand. Longer takes will probably drift out of sync after a while but those can always be manually resynced by eye. Since most music videos are rapid fire cutting no one will ever know. To make a 24p DVD you simply output direct to Compressor and choose the appropriate quality setting. The 24p output should be detected automatically.

Thank you Mr. Kadner.

One more question, will there be an issue if this video is put on a dvd with non-24p videos? If so what do I do to avoid conflicts?

Thank you,

Derek

Not really an issue- you can't put 24p and 60i in the exact same video stream on a DVD but as long as they are different videos on the disc it's fine. The DVD player itself will handle the changes. Most Hollywood discs have the feature itself at 24p and the behind the scenes videos at 60i- no problem.

Cant tell if the footage is shot already from your posst. If it is not already shot, then you can do it several ways.

The best would be to get a pro recorder, copy the Cd and then use it as a playback device. I feed the out of the recorder to the camera, as a reference for each shot, and this way while you are recording, the talent is lip syncing to the music. Then in post, just replace the camera sound track with the music.

If you want to go high tech, you can get the recorder to feed timecode to the slate, slate each shot, and use 1 of the outs of the recorder to feed the audio to the camera at the same time. I just did this and it works really good, no problem syncing.Roll the camera first then start the recorder, the camera will record the slate/timecode of the audio. It took alot of practice to do this, and I ended up purchasing both the slate and sound devices recorder 744T. Very expensive, but I wanted the equipment for other projects anyway.

As far as the timeline goes, set it up for easy setup, 720P and set up the seq. as a 24fps seq. Edit as usual, export with compressor and voila..
