Add link to flash banner. Getting rather frustrated here...
on Mar 8, 2012 at 8:30:15 pm

Seriously, I have spent four hours trying to add a link to a stupid flash banner in Flash CS5, watching several tutorials.

Anyone know about a tutorial that will explain it very clearly?
The link should work on the whole banner all of the 10 seconds..

Thanks,
-Kenneth

Hi,

- Create new layer at the very top of your banner
- Select rectangle tool and draw a rectangle on the top layer you just created
- Select selection tool and double click on the rectangle you just created
- Open the properties panel and set Width and Height to exactly the same dimensions as your banner
- Press F8 to bring up the 'Convert to symbol' dialog.
- Give a name (preferably hit_mc) and select 'Movieclip'. Click 'OK'
- Click on the newly created movieclip (just once, don't doubleclick)
- Open the 'Properties' panel again and scroll down to 'Color effect'.
- Select 'Style: alpha'. Set the alpha value to 0%
- Click on the movieclip again and press F9. The actions panel will open.
- If your SWF file properties are set to actionscript 3.0, it will give you a warning that you cannot place code directly onto objects. Banners should not be made using AS3, so switch the property settings for your banner to Actionscript 2 (also set to Flash Player version 8)
- If your SWF file is set to Actionscript 2, you'll be able to enter some actionscript code. Here's what you add:

on(release){
getURL('the_url_that_you_want_your_banner_to_point_to', '_blank');
}

Kind regards,
Pieter

General notice: from now on, I would like to ask everyone to put [AS2] or [AS3] (corresponding to the version of actionscript you are using on your project) in front of their post titles when the question is actionscript related! Please help us help you faster. Thank you.

Thanks a lot.
I made it work now. It seems I was at the last keyframe when inserting link, and forgot some other steps in between when I did things 30 times to try to get it right.

Is it a problem if my rectangle is larger than the banner?

At least its working now, and I dont want to spend any more of my life in Flash.. =)

No, that shouldn't be a problem :)

Kind regards,
Pieter

Hi,

Great post...
I am a beginner on Flash and I've been struggling to find decent Flash CS5 tutorials!

Is this the same for adding links to multiple mages within a rotating banner?

Kind regards
Carrie
