Flash(or image substitute) for use with mobile phones
on Dec 23, 2010 at 3:58:38 am

Hi it has been awhile since I have been on here and the last time I got some extremely helpful advice and I am looking for some more. : )

I have several sites that use use flash slidshows and other flash items. I realize flash is not available on mobile devices, but is there a way I can use a fill-in image that can be used in a case where someone visits the site who is using a mobile device and the flash does not show up. I just want them to see something rather than a box saying "need plug-in". I hope this makes sense and I hope that I am able to get an answer to this. The next option would be to make a mobile site, but I really have not gotten into that area yet as I do not know really where to start as of right now. If you have any questions or need clarity on this, please let me know.

Thanks for your help as always,
Jay

Oh and to add an addition concern. I also will have drop down menus utilized through Dreamweaver's setup, so how will this affect the site on a mobile device?

you just add some 'alternate content' into your embed code. this is often a static jpeg of what ever your swf is ( an exported last frame, maybe)

if you use bobby van der sluis's sefobject2 code generator it is real easy. just put your html code in the 'alternate content' section and it will appear when there is no flash plugin detected.

http://www.bobbyvandersluis.com/swfobject/generator/index.html

dreamweaver drop down menus ( i assume you mean a 'spry' menu ) work via javascript which does work on most mobile devices. they will work on the iphone/ipad at least, i can't say for blackberry etc.

but you will notice that most professional sites stay away from drop downs for mobile sites

Hi Demetri

Yes I meant Spry, it just slipped my mind for a second when I was typing and was kind of lazy to go look it up. : )

Well that sounds like what I am looking for. but will this work for XML based slideshows?

The code generator you provided I am not really understanding totally. Is there a way I can just add a link for "alternate content" to the current code without going through the other stuff? Maybe adding a param name maybe or something like that?

Here is the code: (hopefully you can see it)

=============

AC_FL_RunContent( 'codebase','http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,28,0','width','407','height','435','src','FP','quality','high','pluginspage','http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash','wmode','transparent','movie','FP' ); //end AC code

<object width="407" height="435">
<param name="movie" value="FP.swf" />

<param name="quality" value="high" />
<param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
<embed src="FP.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="407" height="435"></embed></object>

=========================

i could not see your code

how are you embedding the swf into your html ? if you look at the code, you see a commented out section that say:

" ...The browser displays the following alternative content ...." this is where you add whatever you want to be seen if there is no flash

It looks like it may soon be just Apple mobiles; RIM, Google and Microsoft are all delivering Flash on mobile now, or aiming to do so imminently ...

Flash on Blackberry has long been promised,
