Export Movie - Render Width & Height locked in CS5
on Oct 30, 2010 at 9:16:07 am

Hi,

I have just updated to CS5 from CS3 for a job where I have to export a bunch of FLA projects to Quicktime files.

In Flash CS3 I was able to change the 'Render Width' and 'Render Height' in the 'Export Movie.." settings, which told Flash how to render the vectors before creating the QuickTime file. In CS5 these options are locked.

The FLAs I'm working with were created in CS4 or CS5 at a resolution of 530x300, I need to create QuickTime files at 1920x1080. This worked perfectly in CS3 but seems to be no longer available in CS5.

If anyone has a solution I will be forever grateful!

Many Thanks
Shaun Harrison.

Hi Omar,

Modify>Document will change the size of your document in Flash but it won't up-scale your current artwork to fit, and with 4000 FLAs to change from 530x300 to 1920x1080 I don't want to have to re-scale all the assets manually.

The only work around we have found (apart from back saving to CS4 then to CS3) is to use the vcam action, set that actions x, y values to 1920, 1080. You will also need to set the document size to 1920x1080. Then on exporting a QuickTime, the render height and width will read 1920x1080, ensure that your QuickTime settings are set to use current size and hopefully your export will go smoothly (terms & conditions apply).

o yeah that does seem like an easy fix but what if you want to change your ratio too? i used default settings: 550x400 and now i need to switch to 4:3 for YouTube (1920x1080). any ideas?

i only have 26 scenes but manual is going to take much time because i have some scenes with motion tweens.

Hi Omar,

If your comp is in 550x400 then it's already in 4:3, 1920x1080 is 16:9. You can deliver either to YouTube, though I would argue that 16:9 will look better.

You should be able to use the vcam as a cropping tool, so just set the resolution to whatever works for you. If you're wanting to go HD delivery for YouTube then 1280x720 would be enough.

Many Thanks

i wasn't paying attention when i wrote 4:3. i meant to say 16:9 (wide screen).

i guess that i am just going to have to crop it but i ran into a problem. i tried to download vcam but it is not supporting macs. so i then decided to export my movie as a PICT sequence (the quality is much better). then i imported it into final cut pro and once i place the whole sequence in my time line, the quality goes down. do you know why this is happening?
thanks

Hi Omar,

Exporting as PNGs, you're just hitting the same issue. The files are coming out 550x400 therefore FCP is up-scaling them.

You need the vCam action to export from Flash CS5 as anything bigger.

The vCam actionscript does work on Mac, as that's what I'm using. But I'm afraid I'm not a Flash guy, hence why I asked the question in the first place, and don't know actionscript. I just found the answer and got the clients Flash guy to implement it.

Sorry i can't help further.

Many Thanks
