making a flv only play when mouse over
on Aug 29, 2010 at 11:41:27 pm

I've looked around your forums and couldn't get the answer I need.I'm sure you can help me. I need to make a flv that I import only play when I go over it with the mouse. I don't want any playback controls. I've got CS4 Flash for Mac.

What I've imported my flv via "File">"Import">"Import Video">"Load external video with playback component"
But then action script sucker-punches me :)

I trust you can help me.
Thank you very much

there are several ways to approach that. here is one of them. if you are using the
"File"->"Import"->"Import Video"->"Load external video with playback component"
browse for the file, click CONTINUE.
then for skinning,
instead of choosing a skin, choose None. hit continue, then finish.

once it appears on your stage, give it an instance name, such as 'flvPlayer'
THEN, turn that into a movieclip symbol,and give it an instance name of say "btn"

then you can code the player and the button like this to make it only play on rollover, and stop on mouse out:

btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, vidPlays);
btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, vidStops);

function vidPlays(e:MouseEvent):void

function vidStops(e:MouseEvent):void
{ btn.flvPlayer.stop()

hope that helps
