CD Menu
on Apr 10, 2010 at 6:16:54 pm

I'm a total flash noob trying to figure out how to create a simple menu for a CD. Specifically to launch powerpoint presentations. Its assumed the person has powerpoint installed so it should be even easier. In searching the web for this there seems to be only one tutorial that requires you to compile your SWF file with a program called "Chameleon Flash". Though it seems everything this program does, Flash does on its own. Also the demo for this tutorial errors out with a file not found.
Could someone point me to a tutorial that works and is not just trying to sell me something. And I don't want to use one of the dozens of CD menu creator programs since this is also a simple flash exercise I want to do to get my feet wet in Flash.
This has to be a really simple thing to do...right? Thanks for any help.

OK you don't really need Flash but it would do the job. But http://www.entheosweb.com/Flash/external_links.asp could probably get you started.

You might want to use an autorun.inf file to launch (try to launch, depending on users' security settings, Windows versions) a file from the CD.

For Flash, you'll just need to make a page with a list of links.

Thanks for the reply. But this won't work for powerpoint files. I already tried this method and it only works with filetypes that can be shown in a browser.

I guess there would be security implications if Flash files could execute remotely executables on the user's desktop ...

There was a way to do exactly that, though, with fscommand, for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised if adobe have closed that hole.

You might be able to do something based on
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00708.htm

Essentially, you launch to a browser page and pass the browser the ppt address (web address, wherever you have it loaded). If the user has ppt viewer / ppt installed and their browser allows it, the file should launch ...

I guess this is why programs like Flash Chameleon and Flash Juggler exist, as they provide a work-around. Since the client wants a specific look and functionality for the menu, it looks like I'll have to spend a little money to get this job done.
Thanks for your help.
