tracking link for swf file
on Feb 3, 2009 at 1:39:30 am

I am not much of a flash guy but I created a flash banner for a friend in After effects and the site that he is having the banner on asked me "have your designer build in this tracking link so we can track the # of clicks through our software. The banner links to your site."

Then he gave me the link from that I should use.
Is there a way to embed a link into the banner? is this something I do on my end with the swf file?
I have no idea.

Never heard of a tracking link, but adding a button that can follow a hyperlink is easier enough.

Fastest(?) way to do it (AS2):

Create a new layer.
Draw a box the size you want your button.
Select the box and right-click.
Choose Convert to Symbol...
In the popup, choose Button, and click ok.
Double click on your new button box.
A new timeline for the button appears.
Grab the frame and drag it to Hit. You should have empty frames in Up, Over and Down.
Click back to your main timeline. You now have a light blue box.
Select it and hit 'f9'.
In the actionscript window, use this code:

on (release) {
getURL("yourlink", "_blank");

the '_blank' means the link opens in a new window. Leave out the comma and "_blank" if you don't want that functionality.

And that's it. When you publish the swf, the light blue box is invisble but still there.

Are you talking about a clickTag?

The clickTag is a relatively universal method for tracking a media campaign across multiple media platforms (websites). I say 'relatively' because not every media company writes the clickTag in the same way. Some use clickTAG, others use clickTag and even others just use it with all lowercase letters.

If you -are- talking about a clickTag (so if the webmaster explicitly told you to use a clickTag), just use graham's script:

on (release) {
getURL("yourlink", "_blank");

And replace "yourlink" with _root.clickTag (or _root.clickTAG depending on what link they gave you)

Kind regards,

General notice: from now on, I would like to ask everyone to put [AS2] or [AS3] (corresponding to the version of actionscript you are using on your project) in front of their post titles when the question is actionscript related! Please help us help you faster. Thank you.
