Flash Noob - need advice please
on Jan 7, 2009 at 10:52:24 pm

I am trying to use a video file, which i convert in .flv (using Cleaner 6) as an animated banner on a web page (created in iWeb).

What i would like to happen is just like all these animated adverts around this post...just playing to themselves with no interaction required from the web user.

However, what happens when i drop the .flv onto the web page is a quicktime window appears with all its associated transport controls and frames.

i assume there is a lot more work involved to get the banner to act like a banner...but i have no idea where to begin.

I own macromedias Flash 8 but have never got around to using it as i find it very unintuitive!

Please can some one tell me what i need to do ?

thanks

Hello Adam,

I think this needs to come out as a .swf file instead of a .flv file. What I do is record a video, edit with Windows Movie Maker (hey, they don't spend a lot of money on software where I work), then export the final edit as .AVI. I then import the .AVI file into Flash for "progressive download" which basically reformats the .AVI file into a .FLV file and then creates a .SWF file which acts as the "control" file, displaying the .FLV when it is launched.

If I were to choose the "Embed Video in SWF" option instead of "Progressive Download," I would end up with just the .SWF file (okay, I would end up with the project file (.FLA) and the HTML file, but you see what I'm getting at). And what I'm getting at is that, as I understand it, the .FLV file is just a reference file and what you really need to interact with your HTML software is a .SWF file.

Hope this wasn't as confusing for you to read as it was for me to write!

thanks for trying to explain Charles.

unfortunately for me, it doesn't really help. I think the main problem is that i have no experience of Flash whatsoever, and it is so full of alien terminology that i'm finding it really difficult to get my head around what should be a relatively simple task (well I think it should be!!)

i know from experience using a video hosting company for our work videos, that once i upload an flv file i get a bunch of html code that i drop into the webpage and then the video is viewable with any web browser.

I am now at the stage where I have the flv file, but do not know how to proceed any further. The video will be on my wifes website, we don't have a specialist hosting company with a ready made method of playing the files, so i need to know how its done!

regards
Adam
