Animated drop down menus

Okay, I'm having trouble with creating a drop down menu.

Take a look at it... http://www.factstax.com (This a temporary little upload onto a temporary domain)

okay so anyway, I have been looking at tutorials and using them as a guidline but for the most part have been trying to figure this out myself.

So ANYWAY... to the problem:

Right now 'RATES" and "SAMPLES" are just text .... but "SERVICES" is a button with a rollover effect, it should change to white text when you rollover it.

The button works fine and dandy on it's own, you can see because i put the button itself alone on the stage off to the left. However, within the drop down menu (Which, by the way, is a movie clip) services doesn't change to white when you rollover it, infact, it doesn't do ANYTHING when you click on it.... It is as though it is not being recognized as a button because it is inside a movie clip.

AM I making sense?

How do I fix this? Services, Rates and Samples are going to need to be all different buttons doing all different things, sending people to different places, obviously.

Oh and as a side note: I don't know how much of a different it makes... But do you see how the nature of my drop down menu allows for a lot of negative space around the individual drop down boxes? Well what was happening was that when you rolled into that negative space then rolled back onto the button it would sort of RESET the drop down animation, making it impossible to ever rollover Services... So what I did was just draw a square on a seperate layer, put it behind everything, and made it transparent... this way the negative space is not actually negative space, there is something there related to the button....

Does that make sense?

The invisible square is behind everything so it shouldn't effect the SERVICES button right?

Thank you so much for your help

If you want to simplify this, you can create and manage drop-down menus in Dreamweaver. Its is under the spry assets section of the "Insert" menu.

Okay So i haven't really gotten any responses...

I've been looking around and I'm going to rephrase my question.

I followed and successfulyy completed THIS TUTORIAL:

http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/dropdownmenu.htm

Now, if you look at his tutorial you'll see that he mentions very early to make sure there are no gaps between your buttons. otherwise the menu will close when you roll into those gaps.

I feel this limits me in the type of drop down menu i create... I need there to be gaps.

Any idea on avoiding this problem while still being able to have gaps?

Okay I FINALLY got the menu behaving the way I need it to behave... its a miracle i swear...

I'm so close, now I just need to know one thing...

The Services button right now is being told to Go To and Stop at frame 10 when released... HOWEVER... This sends the MC (The dropdown menu) to it's own frame 10.... it does not send the WEBSITE to frame10...

How do I get the button within the movie clip to Effect the website (Scene 1) but not the MC (Drop Down menu)

You can check out what it's like right now at http://www.factstax.com

Hey there,

I'm having the same issues - well, actually I'm just trying to learn flash instead of LiveMotion and have been tutorialing it up. I'm going to check out the one you mentioned right now.

But first, I just happened to pull up an old actionscript from LiveMotion. I guess it's the equivalent of AS 1. But having watched a few tutorials on AS3 already, I feel the syntax might be right, and what you're looking for.

I had a pulldown menu in LiveMotion within a movieclip and it had a goto and play command. However, you're right, you have to tell it which movieclip to go to. You might also try making labels, because if you tell it frames, then you're screwed when you move things around.

Anyway, the AS went like this... _parent.gotoAndPlay("features");

With parent meaning the parent timeline. You can also use _root.gotoAndPlay("features");
which would mean the very top timeline (scene 1 basically).

Don't know if that's still applicable in AS3. And of course you wanted gotoAndStop, not gotoAndPlay.

Oh yeah, "features" was simply the label. You'd have your frame number there instead. Don't know how to code that as I've always used labels.

BTW this concept worked for me. Hope you got yours to work. I actually ended up with a little trick of my own. I took the background element, a photo, and made it a movie clip symbol. Then, I gave it a rollover event that sends the pulldown timeline to the start. Something like pulldowns.gotoAndStop("start") with start being a label I put at the beginning of the timeline.

For anyone interested here's where I'm at with my first non-LiveMotion flash project.
