I'm a total noob when it comes to Flash (I'm using CS3 on a Mac), but I've been reading tutorials and noticing that something other people seem to be able to do doesn't work for me. For instance, in order to make a button actually do something I'm told you need to add some actions to that button. I select the button (which I've converted to a button symbol) and then open the Actions panel. But in the place where you enter code it says "current selection cannot have actions applied to it." I've tried it with every kind of symbol with no luck. I've tried AS2 and AS3. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
If you created a new flash document based on AS3 then you will have to add you actionscripts on to the timeline rather than on the object/button. This not possible in actionscript anymore.
You can add actionscript onto objects only if you are using AS2. I hope that was clear enough.
Thanks for the reply. I thought I had tried using AS2, but apparently not correctly. I got it to work, but am wondering: can I combine both AS3 and AS2? What if I have action script that only works in AS3 but want to have a functional button?
You can only use either or but together it is not possible. Though it is possible to translate one to the other.
My suggestion is to stick to one of them also the sooner you familiarize yourself with AS3 the better simce this will be mainstream in the near future.
