Weird problem converting QT to FLV
on May 27, 2008 at 11:53:38 pm

Greetings,
Today I was working on a project that was a 30 second video clip consisting of 2 layers edited in FCP.
One layer is a video from a client which had been compressed using Sorenson3 Codec at 30 fps. The other layer is just a still overlay.
I exported the video as an H264 QT movie, and then somebody else tried converting it to Flash using the Flash media encoder/On2V codec. This was done on a PC.
Every time we make an attempt, the audio is out of sync. I tried to export the video from FCP dozens of ways, but still no solution.
Any ideas?

Someone else might be able to elaborate, but I heard that the latest version of Flash Player/Plugin could play H264 compressed video. I think I remember reading on a forum that all you had to do was change the file extension to .flv. Maybe this is just a myth, but worth trying since it's so easy.

This is true, I do it all the time. It just depends on what version Player you are targeting for ( 9.0.115 or higher for H.264), or if you need an alpha channel (you need to compress to flv using onVP2 for that).

You only need to change the extension if you are using FLVplayback. NetStream doesn't care about extensions, you can leave it as an mov. Also make sure the QT is compressed with fast start enabled or the swf will wait until the whole video is loaded before playing it.

As far as your compression problem, I heard there is a glitch with certain QTs not compressing well into flvs when the audio of the QT other than 44.1khz and its being compressed to flv using 44.1khz. And having them match fixes that glitch. I personally have never ran into that problem, but its worth checking into.
