TED Site Flash Navigation Challenge

Howdy!

I have the challenge of creating a similar navigation to the one used on http:http://www.ted.com in the visualization section. I have been just sinking lower and lower as I try to wade through this with ActionScript 3.0.

Even if someone just has a starting point that would help me out tremendously.

Thanks!

How I would do it is this.

Create an empty MovieClip and on rollover, dynamically load movieclips filled with news items into it. Use the tween class to gentle tween the mc into position (taking into account the x and y positions from the movieclip you just rolled over. Because the movieclip has just tweened under your mouse, you only need to place an onRollOut on the empty movieclip to remove it from the scene again.

Let me know if you need more help.

Doccie - - -

Thanks for your super prompt reply - - - sorry for not thanking you sooner.

I'm an animator and trying to get my feeble little artist head around the AS3 has been a big struggle.

I'll give it a try this evening and see how we do.

My work-around to this point was as follows but is not at all dynamic.

clipLink01_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, clipLinkOver)

function clipLinkOver(event:MouseEvent):void

{
gotoAndPlay("clipLink01");
}

It's actually led to a a coercion error as well.

Anyway... Thanks and I'll let you know how it goes.

jason!

My advice would be not to use AS3 :-) Actionscript 3 was designed to make Flash more appealing for developers. AS3 is an object oriented language, which makes it easier to work together on larger projects. If you're working alone on a reasonably small project, you are actually better off with AS2, plus it will probably give you less of a headache ;-)

I was beginning to wonder what this migraine was all about. Thanks for clearing that up.

AS3 has been quite dauntng for my feeble art-school mind.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can make the switch.

Sure thing. Let me know if you run into any problems.

And don't worry, AS3 can be daunting even for us hardcore geeks ;)
