Linking to External File/App from Flash
on Apr 8, 2007 at 1:25:29 am

I am working on a data DVD showing High-Definition Video. I am doing the initial menu for this in Flash. Is there a way for the user to click on a button in the Flash screen and launch an external file/application, for instance, linking to a WMV file and opening it in Windows Media Player?

Thanks for any assistance!

Using getURL in the normal way
(e.g.
myPlayerButton.onRelease = function() {
getURL("resources/myGreatHighDef.wmv");
}

will try to open an external file (which could be in a folder in the same DVD ROM) and if there is a player app associated with the file on the user's computer then that will (probably) launch the player app. (leaving any security warnings aside).

Is wmv a better way to go than flv files - which compress great, play on Mac as well as Windows, and over which you'll have better control (of playback, and of player performance) than if you go wmv.

Of course flvs with high def video will need a hunky system for decent playback - but that also applies to wmvs.
