autodetect bandwidth connection speed?
on Jun 3, 2006 at 8:05:14 pm

Does anyone know a way I can transparently detect a browsers connection speed, so I can route them to a low or high speed version of the site?

Thanks,
Blase

Here is an article on bandwidth detection from Sonify.org.

The basic pricipal is you set a variable with the current time, then dynamically load some content that is of a known size, and set another variable with the time that the file loads. The difference between the two times is how long it too to download the file, and you know what the file size is, so you can then calculate the approximate bandwidth.
