Problem converint mov files to flv files to use in Flash
on May 26, 2006 at 4:56:59 am

Hello All,

I am new to Flash (film editor) and I am having problems
using the Flash exporter to convert quicktime mov files to flv file so I can use them within Flash. The Flv files do seem to be created, but when I run them nothing happens -- it just shows a blank page.

Any thoughts or debugging suggestions?

How are you playing the FLV files?

They do not play by themselves. You need to make a Flash file with either a FLV component to play it or use NetStream code and video ojbects.

A great set of tutorials on the NetStream method can be found here on the Cow:

Start at the bottom with Video Basics 1, and work your way up.

Hi Todd,

Yes, this is the tutorial I used to play my flv file. I used the netstream code as it documented:

var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
nc.connect(null);

var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
theVideo.attachVideo(ns);

ns.play("Y:TestimonialsTestimonials subclipsTestimonial1.flv");

After exported my flash document it created the movie, but nothing played???

Any suggetions?

Thx
C

If you're on PC, try downloading the FLV player program here ( http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/article/flv-player-updated ) and see if that will play your FLV. If it won't then you probably had some error in the conversion.

Otherwise, I would check that the Video Object on the stage has the instance name set properly ("theVideo") and that your path is correct. Remember that the path is case sensitive (noticed your drive was a capital "Y") and it's a good idea to avoid spaces in the names of the folders in the path. If I'm having problems with a video playing, I like to take the path out of the equation and put it in the same folder as the Flash file, then remove it from the ns.play line ( so it would be ns.play("Testimonial1.flv"); {and double check that the name of the file is in fact capitalized, again I prefer to keep things all lower case, just to remove the variable from the equation})

The easiest way is to just choose "Import video" within Flash and let it convert the QT and create the FLV Component for you.

AFter the conversion, it will automatically put the video on the stage and add the FLV component to your library.

all you have to do is then Publish.

You can control more via ActionScript if you so desire, but the above is the first step I learned via the Total Training dvd of Advanced Actionscript and it works beautifully.
