movie with sound.
The problem is that the sound playing with no connection to the movie.

If you have your sound on the timeline, rather than controled by actionscript, you probably have the Sync setting set on "Event" which means once the sound is started, it will play until it is complete or loop/repeat the number of times it is set for. If you change the sync to "Stream" the sound should stop if you move to a part of the timeline that it does not exist on. Of course the downside to "Stream" is that if you stop or pause the timeline, the audio will stop or pause also.

If you're controling the sound through actionscript, you just need to tell your sound object to .stop();

Did you check the properties, and make sure that the Sync setting is set to "Stream"?
