Easy to use affordable streaming flash video?
on Jan 3, 2006 at 8:13:24 am

has anyone found a reasonably easy to use and cost effective Streaming flash solution? I saw some of the recommended places on the macromedia site, but their pricing and process isn't obvious. You have to sign up and request some BS consultation.

Just wondering how feasible / easy this is. I have some big clips that I'd like to play back and from what I understand, streaming is recommended if the audience could be large and the files are big.

You can stream without the use of the Flash Communication Server. The difference is in efficiency. Without the Server, video loads until the buffer is full, and continues to load until completed. The Communication Server only keeps the buffer full thereby being much more bandwidth efficient. Also with the Communication Server, video is not cached on end users' machines, but the server can start a video at any point in the video.

I don't know how the cost/benefit compares when using the service Macromedia pushes, but the cost of not using it is just bandwidth and maybe a little speed.

Out of curiousity, how large/long are your big clips?
