trying to just play a .flv
on Nov 17, 2005 at 6:17:56 pm

sorry, this may seem dumb, but i have done hours of research to try to solve myself and i still can't simply play a .flv in Flash Player.
First off, I'm on a Mac, using Final Cut pro HD, just installed Flash MX, and updated the exporter to 1.2.
I took the steps to export a flv through final cut , on my desktop is the .flv file, i click on it and Flash Player 7 comes up, but will not play the movie.
It asks for a URL, do i have to play of the web??

Note: I downloaded Flashplayer 8, thinking that may be the problem, but Flashplayer 7 is still coming up.

What am i missing here??

thanks very much

scott

Flash player does not play a file with the .flv extension. In your Flash MX (if that is the newest one you have) you can import the flash video into a project timeline and then play the .swf file published from said project.

If you have Flash MX 2004 or newer (8), you have many options such as streaming from a .flv outside of the .swf, import onto the timeline as in MX or use a component to play the .flv. But no version of Flash Player will play a solitary .flv file.

When you say "use a component to play the .flv, what do you mean?? are there any players that will simple play the file?

I know of no player specifically for .flv's. Personally, I've made a swf that can play flv's (at 320x240) but it is not an actual application that will automatically play flv's upon double-click.

Components are basically movie clips that Macromedia has made for you, to speed up production time or take out your need for actionscript knowledge. Flash 8 comes with a very customizable video player component and a better video codec than used in previous versions.

IF you just want to play a .flv on the PC use this standalone application good for Flash 8 as well

or the Flash 8 version is @ http://www.martijndevisser.com/

On the mac I created a SWF that will play a flv named "1.flv" so if I create a flv on Mac I rename it to "1.flv" and drag it to the same folder as the swf and it plays, when I launch the .swf
