I'm at a loss here... Need some advice on putting together my reel

Hey all,

I can really use some advice because I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out what kind of approach I need to take with my demo reel.

Most of the footage I have to put on my reel is broadcast material from the cable sports network I used to work for, but I've also done a music video and a couple of other projects on the side as well.

What I'm trying to figure out is if it is better to show more of the individual pieces as they were edited or whether I should take the montage approach (which I have seen a lot of on the web), re-cutting my existing work to music and adding some motion graphics.

I am looking to gain employment as an editor and not a VFX Artist, and while I'm capable with some motion effects and programs, I'm not sure how important it is to add a lot of that in.

Do you guys have any ideas of what would be my best approach? I appreciate any and all input you might have.

This is just my opinion but, if you are looking to be an editor then just show kick butt editing. I would probably go towards the montage as the demo reel itself. If you are sending a DVD add other trks with longer snippets of your finished work. Hope that helps

In my opinion, I would use a combo of both styles. ANYONE can cut random images to music. What separates a great reel from a mediocre reel is taking some of your favorite edited sequences and keeping them intact in the reel, while keeping the music and rhythm going of the whole reel. It shows a small bit of your story telling skills but also that you have great rhythm and style. There is alawys the issue with creating editor reels: how to show off storytelling skills in two minutes. I agree with what Brian says about having the work in full to show when asked as well.

I personally don't have any motion graphics in my reel, I know so many specialists in motionography that I have not bothered to refine those skills. I sell my skills as an editor, and show my clients projects I have completed with my motionographer contacts and their own reels so the clients get a picture of what we do. Hope that gives you some ideas!

Thank you both for your input! This actually gave me some good ideas of how I'm going to approach my reel.
