Tell Me How Terrible I Am! (constructively)

Hey everyone,

I am a graduating Senior at Columbia College Chicago, and just got done with a rough cut of my demo reel.

I was wondering if some of you could take the time and give me some constructive criticism. You can find it here: http://mark.statuskuo.net/DemoReel/MarksWinter08DemoReel.mov

On the reel, you will find works created with Maya, After Effects, Nuke and Vue.

Thanks a lot in advance, and I look forward to seeing what you have to say!
Peace,
Mark

PS - Please be patient - the file may take a minute to download as it is about 31 Megs...

Very nice!

Suggestion:

I'd like to see some more corporate, commercial or broadcast animations. Make some fake ones... make it look like you have a lot of experience. Make a promo for a TV show, choose a product and do a logo treatment. Make a promo or the travel channel or food network.

I see a lot of skill but I'm more likey to hire someone who has experience.

Good job!

Wow, thanks a lot for the positive feedback. Just out of curiosity, though, would I be breaking any copyright laws by using another company's logo and brand? Just figured I'd ask...

Thanks again!!!

Possibly! I suppose on a bad day you may piss someone off but as long as it's in good taste and you're not misrepresenting it as paid work it wouldn't be a big deal.

Label it as "Spec Creative"..

What about the music you used? Did you buy the rights to that? I doubt it..

Not bad.

However, if it were me, I'd steer clear of using material where you've basically plugged your own elements into a tutorial. Your beginning and ending graphics obviously came from this tutorial, right here on the Cow.

It's an especially bad idea, if you're not going to deviate from the paint-by-numbers and you end up with something that looks just like the result of the tutorial. Now if you take the "results" and tweak it and re-color and alter it (highly) - you get the point I'm sure - then you might get by with it.

In my opinion though, unless you completely modify the results, you run the risk of being called out by the intereviewer (or others on "their" side). The folks in question have likely seen the tutorials that you've mimicked. You'll be plainly showing them that you can follow step-by-step directions but you're not showing them any creativity or innovation- which would be so much more valuable than proving that you can operate the software.

Just my 2 cents on the matter. Good luck in the future!

Thanks for posting!

I'm fully aware that the Creative Cow community knows its own content when they see it. The titles were a quick fix for the reel, since I didn't want to spend an excessive amount of time creating them. Since this is a rough cut, it will most likely be fixed in the fine cut.

Thanks a lot for posting, and I look forward to any and all feedback that you may be able to offer in the future!

Thanks again!
Mark

Hate to split hairs here. But I now feel I need to make a clear distinction. My point about using tutorial material is not to say: "You're posting on the Cow, and you're material came from the Cow. Your'e busted". That's not it! But, ironically, it sort of IS IT...

But for now, we need to forget this particular forum. That's looking too literally at what I'm saying. The true intent of my suggestion was to simply not include any tutorial material in your reel - regardless of it's origin.

Think of it like this: You said, "...I'm fully aware that the Creative Cow community knows its own content when they see it..." Now extrapolate. You should then be fully aware that most anyone in the overall "MoGraph community" is going to recognize material from it's own community. It's all just a matter of scale.

I'm simply saying that reel content should, IMHO, be strictly original. So if your intent with this reel is to clean it up in the final cut - then we can agree to agree.

Sorry if I misrepresented myslef. I understood your initial intent clearly, but mistakingly spoke to only one portion of it in my previous response.

Thanks again for taking an active role in this forum!

You're welcome. On all fronts.

And I probably didn't say enough of it it in my initial review - but the original parts of your content are, in fact, quite nice! Keep up the good work!

You have a few very nice moments going. your name is nicely done, clean. the 3d is pretty good, Im not a fan of the fire
done in 3d, try compositing some fire footage or particle fire
and composite in after effects. You can keep the fire as a reflection object without rendering it. Always choose less animation but better quality. Dont worry about copyrights if
its for your demo reel, as long as you are not selling your reel
no one will come after you. (they wouldnt anyway at your stage)
If you have a chance to interview anywhere or you really want to
get in somewhere do an animation of THEIR logo or brand. People LOVE to see their company in any way shape or form.

good luck

scott

Mark,

I think there is some elements here that show you know the basics of the software and that is good if your interest is in doing the grunt work. What I think is missing is a little more conceptual work where there is an idea communicated. Do you have anything more along those lines yet? What is your objective with the reel?
