Advice on reel.
on Oct 4, 2007 at 11:05:53 pm

I'm having trouble putting together a reel. Most of the reels I see online are "sizzle" type reels. Fast cuts of flashy shows cut to the beat of a fast song. My best work does not lend itself to this type of edit (nor do I think this is my strength). My best work is long and short form doc work. Finding the story/heart in a mass of disparate material. I have no idea how to show this in a 1-2 minute demo. So, I've sent out complete pieces to very little response. Another problem is that my market is 90+% commercial work.

Any ideas, advice, thoughts are greatly, greatly appreciated.

Hello. I had a similar problem with you when I was looking for a job. Have you tried making a (fresh) short film instead of cuts from your existing films, that portrays your abilities to the best? And you can add your existing work to the dvds so they could view it if they wanted to.

Or try different treatment - different pace, feel, etc to compliment your work, instead of you trying to suit them into something everyone else did.

Good luck :)
