I'm a design graduate, specialised in film. I've edited a couple of short films, a couple of TVCs and some motion graphics, about 5-6. I do not have alot of material, how do i put together a good reel? I need some pointers/guidelines? I'm hoping to get into a motion graphics company as either a junior designer or editor. Lastly, should I combine my films n graphics in one reel?
I think it was one of the big directors who suggested you start with your second best piece and end with your best.
Don't be tempted to cut pieces up and show different parts across the reel. It suggests you are short of material and generally slows the pace of a reel as people get hooked then feel they are moving backwards.
If you didn't do all the work then credit people for their contribution.
Use pieces that indicate the job you are interested in. Motion graphics or editing? A reel full of motion graphics cut well automatically shows your editing skills.
Legally use a soundtrack and loosely cut to the beat.
Finally learn from the best. Checkout the reels on motionographer.com or mograph.net
