A piece of my work since I dont have enough for a demo reel yet

Hey,

A long time ago I put up a post about having issues with my future job. I got some great replys and It made me think a lot...I wanted to show some of my work at the time but had difficulty in getting some of it up at first (due to time constraints and web issues with my computer), im ending my sophomore year in college and I had time to put one composition up to show for it!

This was for my 2D animation class...we use after effects a lot and for this particular project I had to make a quick logo composition for my name (NHUR-Nate Hurwitz).
This took me a few days but came out pretty good, I started out with some footage of a ripple effect (which I got royalty for free)...it was very grainy though when I enlarged the scale size of it, so I blurred it and put a glow effect on it to highlight the ripples. I also animated a four color gradient that was displaced over the ripple footage. The water fill footage I found in motion so I used that and tinted it blue.
My friend was used as a model for the silloutte and we went for 15 min against a bluescreen for the model footage.
The beam was the beam effect (of course!) on a new layer, I combined this with a lense flare effect on another layer to get the quick flash you see comming out of the model when he points his fingers.
The explosion was just a sparkle effect in motion i rendered to the right size which seemed to work well.

Let me know what you guys think! This is my first time showing some of my work on this forum...
Thanks!

i gotta say im not half as good as some of these guys on here but i can say that ur reel isnt that bad. its clear u understand the program but i think u can put a lil more time into what ur doing. the main thing i didnt like was that ur friend blends to much with the background.
keep up the good work

Hey,

Thanks for the reply! I thought no one was gonna reply to this for a minute...I see what you mean by the not-too-clear contrast in the video. I think its not only because of the dark background but its also because of the not too good compression job I did...I'm learning and experimenting with compressing video and I am getting better little by little with it. The project was meant to be a short logo...do you think the explosion works ok? I wasn't sure of that and I really wanna use this in my portfolio. I know the cinematograohy for the bluescreen model wasn't too great, but my friend who agreed to help wasn't too enthusiastic about it since he wasn't getting paid for it...And the sound will be in it when I get done finalizing it. Thanks for the reply though! Ill put up more projects as they finish.

Hey Nate,

I wonder if you somehow made the silhouette of your friend more a part of the background. Maybe make some bubbles form his shape or something. And give him some wavyness. Just an idea.

By the way, I'm from Buffalo too! Wahoo!

haha nice!

Yeah that seems like a cool idea Jim. At first I was goin for a James Bond intro kinda look, but there are so many other possibilities! Do you work for any companies in Buffalo? I'm not originally from Buffalo, but I do live there for school so I know the area well now (since I've lived here for about 2 years). Did you go to school here at all or somewhere out of the city? Thanks a lot for the idea by the way!

I grew up in Niagara Falls and went to school at Buff State. I moved to N Carolina las year after getting laid off over at Adelphia. I worked for their local orination channel. Now I work at an ABC affiliate in Winston-Salem. I see you go to Canisius? I used to work with their media dept. They've all since formed theor own company--Full Circle Studios. Anyway, good luck in your studies!

Jim
