Get color and opacity from layer (particle)
on Mar 14, 2017 at 12:35:29 am

Is there a way to have particles get their color and opacity from the layer below them. In the emitter tab there is a "take image color" in the color mode however it is greyed out.

You could apply a Stencil Alpha blend mode to the particles over that layer.

That does make an interesting effect for something like a ghost but is not what I need. I want to fade out the image and have the particles retain their color over the life of the particle as they slowly fall. To make a disintegrate effect. With stencil Alpha even if I duplicate the image and put it on top and fade it out still the particles only appear where the image is.

So as far as I can tell the answer is no it cannot be done in motion.

[David MacRae] "In the emitter tab there is a "take image color" in the color mode however it is greyed out."

This option ("Take Image Color") is available if you have the Emitter's "Shape" popup (first parameter) to "Image"

Thanks. Unfortunately this turns all the particles in the layer to the main image color but does not turn the transparency so it does not work either. (it covers the character and background whereas I only want the character covered) I was going to try another idea but when I add enough particles to cover the character Motion gets really slow and I get a spinning beachball for minutes at a time. I never had that problem with other software. I ever tried turning particle image off and still really slow.

It looks like I should look elsewhere for particles. I am actually trying to replace Particle Illusion which was great for this type of thing and really fast.

[David MacRae] "this turns all the particles in the layer to the main image color but does not turn the transparency so it does not work either."

there are ways of getting it to follow transparency too (by arranging the comp a little differently) but if you're finding it unacceptably slow on your machine and looking into other solutions then it's probably not worth getting into it...

one thing I would suggest though, is that for the effect you describe, rather than a particle emitter you might actually want to be using a replicator which is a sort of particle array - since in the effect you describe I would think rather than particles constantly emitting with control over particle lifespan etc. you just need a sort of particle screen which you could animate by means of a gravity and/or attractor behavior etc. - this would probably give you better performance since a replicator (as opposed to an emitter) doesn't need to spend cycles keeping track of the so called "history" of the emitter since it doesn't include that same time element

I was just surprised that it was slow because I have a new 15 In mac book pro and other things run fine. I was testing blender with 3d particles with no problems and Carrara too. Anyway I only do effects for animation as I am an aspiring animator. I do want to stick with particles as I do need control over those other parameters. I was just thinking of staying with 2d compositing. As I said Particle Illusion worked but unfortunately I cannot upgrade the OS past Yosemite or it will not run. I guess I will keep my old os or create a parralles just to run that one program.
