I have made this short animation for my clinic's screen, however I wanted to add a shadow cast on to the map from each of the location markers. I've tried moving the files into one folder etc but I can affect the surface with the light but no shadows are cast over the map with different lights, different group arrangements and in all my other attempts.

Any help with this would be fantastic as it would really finish off the animation nicely.

Thank you in advance.

Charlie

[Charles Herbert] "I've tried moving the files into one folder etc but I can affect the surface with the light but no shadows are cast over the map with different lights, different group arrangements and in all my other attempts."
Here is what I found while looking at it... the first thing that looks wrong is that the Blend Mode on your "Location copy" groups are set to Normal but they should be set to Pass Through. You can select them all at once and change the Blend Mode and you'll see shadows appear but only for the white circles.

The next thing that looks wrong is the "Red copy" groups (inside the Location groups) have their Type set to 3D but at that point it should still be 2D because it's a composite 2D object at that level. Once you change those to 2D, the rest of the shadow will appear.

Finally, you'll probably want to adjust the Opacity and Softness of the Shadows section from the Light in the scene.

Just a comment... I would have created the map rotated -90 degrees on the X axis. This way Y is up and down, and X is right and left, and Z is forward and back. This is how most 3D designers think. It was strange working in a project where the floor was standing on it's side. ;-)

Otherwise, it was a nice motion graphic. It looks like you put a lot of work into it.

Hello John,

Thank you so much for looking at this form me, all your advice worked beautifully.

I've put the final video after some additions and text in the dropbox if you're interested in seeing the final video.

Thank you for your advice too, I'm a Chiropractor and self taught myself to use final cut and motion as a hobby so probably have some questionable habit, however the outcome is usually okay.

Hugely appreciated (it looks much better with the shadows, a good finishing touch)

Just downloaded and watched it. You know the shadows are subtle but they really help sell the shot. I like it! Nice work.
