Template is super slow
on Jan 22, 2012 at 6:08:04 pm

I searched the forum and found similar issues to this, but nothing I've tried has worked. Trashing preferences did nothing, the RAM preview just takes too long.

So, I am using a 3D template. I need to make adjustments for the client, but when I do anything - put something in the drop zone, add text, even move the cursor - it takes at least 5 seconds for Motion to respond. I'm getting so frustrated. It's only doing it with this project, and it even does it when there are no assets in the project. Anyway, my assets are only jpgs, not even mov files, so it's not like the media is too large.

I need to make a lot of changes, but I need to be able to figure out what parts of the template to change, and since it takes forever just to move the cursor, I cannot see a way that it's possible for me to work in this project at all. For instance, one of the changes I made isn't showing up, so I need to see what's going on, but even just expanding the track is taking up to 10 seconds.

Any suggestions?

Have you asked the vendor who sold you the template?

No one else seems to have a problem. If I just scroll through, I can see the camera moving, but whatever was on the screen last just sticks for about ten seconds, then the pinwheel comes on and it thinks, and then it just jumps to wherever the cursor is stopped. I've done huge, complicated and media-heavy projects before, and this is a 21-second project. It just seems like my computer can't handle it, but it's handled much larger projects with no problem in the past.

What are your computer specs, how much RAM, and what graphics card? Motion uses the graphics card heavily, that is the most important part.

Your specs are decent - what is the resolution of the images your are using? Some templates are very complex and just can't be played in real time. Disabling or soloing layer, changing the resolution and/or quality setting under the View menu, clear your RAM cache often (Mark > RAM Preview > Clear RAM Preview), and setting small play ranges are all techniques for working with complex projects.

Blah. I will just have to deal with it, I guess. It stinks that it takes almost 10 minutes to do a RAM Preview of 300 frames ...

I would not do a RAM preview. I would just export the play range you are interested in, it will be faster.

What is the resolution of your images? That can have a huge impact.

Hello Lynette, another thing I would try is to adjust the render settings inside of Motion. One at a time, turn off the Motion Blur, Depth of Field, and Shadows as those are huge render hogs.

Once you turn those settings off, you can now do your tests and then turn them back on when you are done.

Some tricks I use to keep the render times low are to reduce the amount of blur on the shadows from the light settings, I also turn off motion blur until I am completely ready for final delivery.

Let me know if any of this works.

Have a wonderful day!
