Is there a way to apply a transparency gradient to a solid color?

Sure. Just change the fill to Gradient and add and adjust opacity tags.

Yes, Select the Shape. Hit F4 to open up the Shape tab. Under the Style tab change the "Fill Mode from Color to Gradient. Make both gradient colors the same. Above where the two colors are you will see a white square. That represents the opacity. To add another square click anywhere above the white rectangle. Then select one of the squares and changes its opacity. See image below:



Other wise you will have to do a blend mode or Image mask. To learn more about that check out this tutorial on creating a Hologram tutorial
