Bleed through effect - Inkblot

I am a student of Motion, meaning I understand the fundemental concepts but not always how they inter-relate in real work.

This is a great video of an ink blot bleeding through onto paper. Obviously this could have been filmed, but it could also have been animated.

Can someone please kindly tell me if this is possible in Apple Motion, and if so, how could this have been created? I am not so much interested in the blending of the images in the centre of the blot but more the movement (bleeding) of the inkblot itself. I wouldn't have the faintest idea where to begin.

Many thanks

Yes, you could do this in Motion. There are actually a few ink bleed effects available within Motion as paint stroke styles.

The basic approach would be to draw paths, get the ink bleed paint strokes moving along them at the desired speed, and then apply them as animated masks to reveal the images underneath.
