Motion causes havoc with video card
on Jan 19, 2011 at 2:07:53 pm

I'm having a problem with my video card that seems to be isolated to Motion (and probably related to earlier posts of very slow renders)

I have an early 3.0 8 core macpro, 9 gigs of ram and the ATI X1900.

When I'm running Motion, the fan on the ATI ramps up and down - exports are very slow (like 8 hours for a 30 second animation) and a few times, I've had the computer go into a sleep mode and won't wake up. I need to do a forced shut down by holding down the power button. (I've noticed a red light on the ATI card lights up when this happens)

This seems to be isolated to Motion, The Motion project is pretty simple compared to some After Effects projects I'm working on and I haven't had any problems with complex 3D work in Cinema 4D.

Also, I've experienced these video card fan and sleep issues when rendering motion projects inside FCP as well.

This is Motion 4 running under 10.5.8.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (but please don't tell me to start by doing a clean install of the OS and reinstalling everything) ;)

thanks!

Have you opened your computer to look at the card? May well be clogged with dust and need a good cleaning.

oh yeah.... We're thinking alike. Amazing what you think of immediately after pressing the POST MESSAGE button.

Good news is that we both seem to be right.

The fins on the air intake side of the video card was caked with a layer of dust. Amazing how much quieter my machine is running now too!

;)

Thanks again, Mark!

Just a quick follow up for anyone who cares...

After cleaning the intake fins on my video card, a render that took 7 hours (assuming it was even able to finish without my machine shutting down) just finished in 1.5 hours and my machine is back to being crazy quiet.

Excellent, glad that worked, and thanks for posting your results - not enough folks do that.
