Installing only Motion?

Hello,

Simple question here but couldn't find an existing post about it.

I am working on a computer that has FCP7 installed on it, and I have the FCStudio discs to hand, but when I load the install disc it doesn't seem to give me the option of installing only Motion. I really don't want to have to reinstall FCP and Compressor in order to get Motion onto this computer.

Am I being dense here?

Thanks,
Chris

Here is a post Stephen Smith wrote to me.

Another great way to go is by purchasing Motion templates. Here are some sites, I'll let you determine if they are great or not:

http://www.motionvfx.com/ (motion and AE)

http://motiontemplatesonline.com/

Ok, maybe I'm being stupid again but I can't see this Stephen Smith post of which you speak...

I'm not really interested in Motion templates, I just need to do some rough graphics for a project.

Thanks,
Chris

You can't install Motion alone.

Even if FCP is already on the computer?

Bugger.

Sorry this must have posted in the wrong thread. But Yes, as Mark said you HAVE to install the suite, this is one of the issues people have with motion.

If you only install the apps and custom choose to not install the templates and free sound effects, etc from Soundtrack Pro I believe the whole install is maybe around a gig. Though if you have less than a gig available on your hard drive you really should get more hard drive space.

And from there you can always delete FCP, STP, DVDSP, the apps from your Application folder and be left with just Motion at around 350 MB. That said, those other apps do indeed rock...

If you use the official installer, then no, you can't install Motion separately. But a perfectly legitimate app like Pacifist can be used to do it.

I've used it myself to reinstall Motion on its own, and I've also used it to reinstall Mail after my daughter managed to delete it (Apple tells you to reinstall OS X from scratch if any OS X apps are deleted or corrupted).

All Pacifist does is allow you to inspect the contents of .pkg and .dmg files. Use it on the FCS install disc and you'll see the separate install packages for all the individual apps. Ditto the OS X install disc; I just drilled down, found the specific installer for Mail, and had it reinstalled in a few minutes.
