(possibly) fairly obvious mask question, please help!

I've got a video clip as the bottom layer, and a solid coloured shape as the layer above. I want text to move across this top layer, cutting out to reveal the video below.

i.e. You see words moving across the screen with the video filling them in.

At the moment, if I use the text as a subtract mask, it cuts through both layers, even though I've separated the video layer and shape layer into separate groups, and grouped the text with the top later.

I've tried various ways of doing this but can't do it... and it's really doing my head in, since I'm sure it's pretty easy.

Note to self: learn how to use Motion properly.

Anyway, if anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

Hi, I'm not an expert, but have you played around with the blend modes of the layers... like alpha stencil etc...

I think you may need to make sure your layers are set to Normal and not Pass Through.
