1080i 60 projects are square
on Sep 17, 2007 at 2:01:26 pm

For some reason every time I create a new 1080i 60 project in Motion, it makes the project square and everything I put in it becomes a 4:3 size. The output on my intensity card shows it correctly on my preview screen but the whole project is... square and not 16:9 like its supposed to be.

Any tips on how to change this?

Howdy,

Are you sure that the projects are being set to a square pixel aspect ratio? Check the project settings (Cmd+K) to confirm. Do you have the 'Correct for Aspect Ratio' option ebabled in the Canvas View menu (found below the toolbar)? That tells the Canvas to compensate for the aspect ratio of the project, and would explain why your output preview is OK but the Canvas is not.

It is set to square and the "correct for aspect ratio" is not selected and it still doesn't fix it. I also tried opening a DVC Pro HD 1080i project and it does the same thing. When I open a 720p project it's fine.

Ah, it didn't occur to me to ask what type of media you're using. If you pick the Broadcast HD 1080i60 preset, you're getting a 1920x1080 project, which should be square. If your footage is XDCAM- or HDV-originated, then it's really 1440x1080 and uses a 1.33 aspect ratio. Additionally, DVCPRO HD uses 1280x1080 at a 1.50 aspect ratio. If your footage originates from one of those formats, then you'll want to pick the appropriate preset.

I'm using video taken from a Sony HD 1080i. My main problem is that from the very beginning when I select a new project, it makes everything 4:3. I'm not really sure if thats exactly what it's doing but it's definitely taking everything and squishing it and not showing me a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Turning on the "Correct for Aspect Ratio" worked!

Thanks!

Take a look at my answer to a similar question 3 threads down. In a nutshell, I've found it best to change the project settings to full raster square pixels (in your case, you make it 1920X1080), and then I just make sure the rendered output matches the settings of my FCP timeline. This helps eliminate jaggies & other artifacts that I was seeing on DVCPro HD 720p footage.
