Best way to export to FCP?
on Aug 9, 2007 at 6:07:35 am

Hi folks
I've read the posts but didn't find a conclusive answer to my situation so...
Working in PAL 8bit uncompressed, I type up my animated Clock Slate in Motion then save, and drop the motion file onto the fcp timeline, render for about 30secs, and its good to go ...but have upgraded to Studio2 and now the render time is 17mins!
I'm running a dual 2Ghz G5 with 2.5GB ram, I know it's not the fastest but that's a crazy increase in render time!
Is it better to export a QT movie, or is it best to use a different codec in Motion, or....(your suggestion here please!).
Many thanks in advance for you excellent solutions!

Depends if you need an alpha or not and whether you're working uncompressed or not. Animation codec or DV are pretty solid also ProRes.

Hi Noah
I'm working PAL 8 bit uncompressed (upper field) and don't need an Alpha channel. I expected that setting both Motion 3 and FCP6 to 8 bit uncompressed would keep the render time down, but obvously not. Does using a different codec reduce the time?
Cheers

It's a huge codec- are you editing 8 bit uncompressed? If you are you'd greatly benefit from an AJA or Blackmagic card.

Hi Noah
Yeh we are editing 8-bit uncompressed then outputing through an AJA IO box to DVCpro tape for broadcast and a 23"LCD for monitoring. I didn't think that the AJA affected the render time though - does it?
