X1900 XT upgrade from 6800 Ultra DDL
on Jul 9, 2007 at 10:06:18 pm

I'm considering upgrading my dual 2.7 G5 to an octo core Intel. Besides the obvious jump in CPU speed, how much of a benefit will I get in Motion by changing over from the 6800 Ultra DDL to the Radeon X1900 XT?

Heya,

I don't think that 6800 will work in the MacPro. Regardless, the X1900 performs significantly better than the 6800 (I've had both).

Right it won't, I was just curious how much better the Radeon is since it's only a $250 upgrade, while the 6800 was quite a bit more than that when I got it a couple of years back if I remember right. Glad to hear that it's that much better, thanks.

if you are looking to save money, just keep the standard 7300 card (get the 256 though) the x1900 did not have a significant jump in preformance as far as I could tell. I bought one and returned it because i was very unimpressed with it. I currently use the 7300 with only 128 and a 7300 with 256, my system with the 256 is a little better, not sure what the price difference is. of course if money is no object, get the x1900 because it has 512 vram and at the very least that will help you i motion 3 with the 3d stuff and doing hidef res

You may also find that thought the X1900XT has good specs, it is limited to graphics of 2048x2048 while Nvidia cards can support graphics of 4096x4096. At least this is the way it used to be.

My machine came with the X1900XT so I can't compare, just say that it's pretty good.

All three cards mentioned can handle images at 4096x4096 quite easily in Motion:

I use the NVIDIA 6800, NVIDIA 7300 and the ATI X1900 daily and the latter is quite easily the best performer. The only sad part in all this is that ATI sells faster cards for much cheaper on the PC side, and Apple hasn't refreshed their GPU options in a *long* time...

The Apple store is still down after the iMac announcement, I'm still hoping on a silent upgrade to their Mac Pros :-)
