Parenting an object
on Jun 24, 2007 at 12:02:08 am

I apologize if this is a simple one, I have a rectangle animated in 3D space, and I would like to parent an image to the rectangle so it follows the same exact 3D animation path. What is the Motion equivalent of After Effect's parenting feature? Thanks!

Heya,

You have a couple of easy options, depending on how you want to set things up:

1. Perform the animation on a group and nest the objects inside the group. This is tidiest if you have a bunch of objects that need to follow an overall animation path but you still want to be able to animate their positions independently, relative to their parent (the group).

2. You can use the Match Move behavior to tell one object to follow the transforms of another. The behavior gives you a lot of control over how much the transforms of the source affect the transforms of the target. It would be overly-complicated to try and explain it here, when Apple has written it up nicely in the Motion Supplemental docs, found here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Motion_Supplemental_Documentation.pdf Check out the blue sidebar on page 63.

Good luck with your project!

Copy the keyframes or copy the behavior(s) that animate the rectable.
