Compositing done in After Effects w/ Apple Motion - **Input Desired**
on Mar 9, 2007 at 7:59:57 am

I'm working on a series of hosting segments shot initially on green screen. I used After Effects to extract the chroma key and then used Apple Motion to create the background, then brought back into After Effects to color correct. Lastly I added some film effects in Final Cut Pro. I'm always worried about my green screen extractions looking cheesy, and just wanted to get the opinion of other hobbyists and professionals. I'd like to get input or constructive criticism about my final composite and also what could have been done to acheive this in less steps.

Hi,

Seems fine but would have to view it full res.

But just wondering why the green screen wasn't done in either final cut or motion, where thay are built in.

Motion = Add Filter/Keying/Blue Green Screen.

Final Cut = Effects/Video Filters/Key/Blue And Green Screen.

grafx that flow!

A higher resolution clip is located below:

The reason I didn't do the Keying in Motion or FCP is #1 I'm just learning Motion, and #2 I've done keying in Final Cut before and it worked cool, but there seems to be more control iin After Effects and with HDV images I can get quicker previews in After Effects. Let me know if you can come up with any other suggestions from reviewing the higher res clip and your position as to how effective the keying would be if done in Motion.

Thanks.

Heya,

The Primatte keyer that comes with Motion is great, but it doesn't compensate for the compression artifacting in DV codecs, like HDV. I highly recommend dvGarage's dvMatte Blast plugin for Motion. It's cheap and keys HDV in realtime on my system. That's as quick a preview as you can get :) Try out the demo from here: http://dvgarage.com/prod/prod.php?prod=dvmatteb

I've been using Conduit from DV Garage in both FCP & Motion, & I've been getting pretty good keys in both. Some shots that have issues with the greenscreen need to be done in Motion, or in Shake where you have more control & better options to create garbage & core mattes.

Looks pretty good. The trick to a successful composite is perfect lighting. Get that right and a key is very easy to pull.
