Brand new "Intel" Mac Pro... seems as though the Sapphire Sparks Plug-ins no longer work with Motion on this machine. Still fine in AE and FCP, but my question.... is Apple looking to phase-out the use of 3rd Party plug-ins? The GenArts folks seem to think so.

Apple has made the core functionality of plugins completely open to Motion developers. I suspect GenArts needs to do some updating more than anything.

I asked at IBC if Sapphire was going to be ported to FXPlug and the answer was that they had other projects to do before that.
A big error in my book, there are a lot of people waiting in the wings with FXPlug products.

There are problems within the FXPlug SDK that Apple should really sort out. Having said that the power & speed of FXPlug is amazing-
blurs are 5 times faster for example. Complex generators work in 1080i in real time on my MacBookPro.

When I spoke with GenArts, they seemed to lay the blame at the feet of Apple, with no indication that there was any fix in the pipeline.

This seems to be the case with Boris as well.

I suspect it's "blame" in terms of if they don't wish to spend $ port over to FX plug. If they wish to stick with the AFX plugin architecture then they are stuck. I also suspect there's not a huge market for these guys in terms of Motion when anyone who is really seriously into motion graphics is going to have AFX too anyway.

Heya,

Since FCP 5.1.2 now supports FxPlug, I would think that they'd be eager to tap that several-hundred-thousand user market. Hopefully they'll come around :)

Official position from Gen Arts

All,

I've been talking to Gen Arts about the problen and Karl kindly sent me ths:-

Indeed, it doesn't look like Apple is going to include AE plug-in
support for Motion on Mac Intel. FX Plugs seems like a fine
alternative but this is a whole different plug-in API that requires
development efforts to support. We do expect this port to be
worthwhile, but have not announced any specific plan or release
schedule for it.
