Making a rat talk - How do you do it?

Got a short story that is in development where the main character is a rat. A real rat. (He will only have a couple of lines) We want to be able to make its mouth move so that it appears he is speaking. I've got an idea how to do this, but is there anyone who has some seasoned tried-and-true techniques for doing this.

thanks

I thought about that but this one is lactose intolerant. Go figure.

That's usually done with 3D animation- not exactly a Motion speciality. Better to go with something like LightWave, C4D or Hash. You'll also need motion tracking software to lock down the 3D mouth onto the rat- Boujou, PFTrack or SynthEyes.

This solution may be a little cheesy (yes, pun intended), but try this:

Create some mouth shapes for different phonemes then composite them on the mouth area so they change every few frames. Here's a link to some animation frames that might help:

If the head moves to the side or up/down, use the distort tool to change the perspective.
