Optimum downsizing of 4k footage to 1080p for 3D tracking?
on Jul 23, 2016 at 4:46:11 pm

Hi guys,

Any matchmovers/VFX gurus' input would be most welcome here...

I need to downsize a 4k video plate that's 4000 x 2160 to 1080p (1920 x 1080). The issue is that they do not share the same ratio, when downsized to 1080p matching the width, the 4k plate creates black bars (letterboxing). And if you match the height, it clips the sides. The plates will need to be 3D tracked very accurately - film back, focal length and other details were all recorded on location... I don't want the downsizing to compromise the data in any way (ie. the screen ratio now no longer matches film back etc.). What is the correct procedure of downscaling the footage whilst maintaining the integrity of the original plate and camera data? Ideally I don't want the letterboxing/pillarboxing, but would cropping them affect the accuracy of the solve??

Thank you in advance!
