Greenscreen Keying Noise
on Feb 28, 2014 at 1:55:16 pm

Hi folks,

i was shooting in front of a greenscreen. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera on ProRes HQ, 1920x1080, 25p.

I am now working on it in Smoke 2013 and actually everything goes easy and well. But there is one big problem: noise and grain avoid a perfect result. When i have a look at the matte in a still the key and the fill looks good. The person is pure white and the background is pure black. But when the pictures start to move you see it guttering/pumping/moving at the edge between black and white (or the key and the fill).

I guess the problem comes from the natural grain of the camera itself, because it was shot and lightened well.
I did some research already, but especially in Smoke i didn't saw any helping posts so far. Would be happy about your answers!

Best,
David

Hi David,

You should be able to detrain or denies the green screen plate to remove the noise/grain.

Once you have done your composite, you can always return the grain back into the composite using the regain node in ConnectFX.

Hope this helps.

Grant

Hey, guys...
Loving your quick tips videos.
One request :
Can you maybe superimpose the key combination you are using ?
I understand it makes us look smart in front of the client at a later point but for the learning point its a little to confusing
Thanks :)

Hi,

Are you asking for the ConnectFX schematic with connected nodes? or the modular keyer?

Sorry, I am not sure what you mean by combinations.

Grant

Thanks so far, guys! :-)

@Grant: I already tried to reduce the noise with my favorite noise reducer called "Neat". But the problem still exists.
@Joel: This tutorial seems very helpful. Will try it out and let you know if it worked!
@Sascha: You are everywhere on the net! :-) I used the "MasterK" in Timeline FX / Axis. Works best for me so far. Already tried the other ones (RGB, YUV, etc) but "the Master" is just the master.
