I'm thinking of getting an Autodesk Smoke. I have a license question though. Is it possible to install the license on 1 desktop workstation (macpro) and 1 mobile workstation - say a 15 inch retina macbook pro? Do I need to pay for 2 license for that set up? Thanks a lot for info.
There are two ways you can use a single license on your two computers:
1. Buy a standalone license and install it on one computer. Then, when you need to work on the other computer, use the "License Transfer Utility" in Smoke to move the license from one computer to the other.
2. Buy a network license (more expensive than standalone) and set one of your computers as the license server. Then set both computers to act as clients to that license server. When you start Smoke on one of the computers, it will check out the license from the server. If you need to use Smoke on the other computer, simply quit it on the first computer and start it on the second one. Your computers need to be on the same network, so that Smoke can "talk" to the license server.
Note that the above options only allow you to run one instance of Smoke at a time. If you need to run Smoke on both computers at the same time, you will need two standalone licenses or a network license with 2 seats.
thanks for the reply. Regarding option #1 with the transfer utility. Can that be utilize an infinite number of times? I'm thinking of a scenario where I have to bring my projects home or on a location on a thunderbolt drive then work on a macbook pro retina then work again on the next day on a desktop machine. Thanks again.
