Smoke Workstation Question
on Feb 5, 2013 at 5:16:27 pm

I am using an older MacPro as my new Smoke 2013 workstation. At first, I will mostly be using Smoke for some stereoscopic compositing that is beyond what I can do on my Avid. I am hopeful that in time I will use it for much more. Here are the system specs:

2 x 3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Zeon (Oct-core)
Early 2008
24GB Ram
Quadro 4000
Mountain Lion OSX
Very Fast SAS Disk Raid

My concern is that since the CPU is older (Zeon comapred to Westmere or Nehalem), it will have sluggish performance. I realize my renders will take a bit longer which I do not mind. I am willing to upgrade the MacPro to a newer model if I find that I am using Smoke a lot but this is all I have for now to get started.

Thanks,

I forgot to add a AJA Kona 3 Card to the system specs.

I'm running smoke 2013 on a 2008 Mac Pro 3.2 8core, 32gb ram, gtx 570, Kona 3 , solid state boot drive and an internal raid and its pretty close to performance with my flame at work,

I don't think you'll have to worry too much, I'd get a SSD boot drive and you'll be fine for a while

Thanks Joel,

I have an 256GB SSD coming in today. I plan on installing Mountain Lion.
