Salutations!

I am looking to purchase a complete-as-can-be-while-on-a-budget editing system.

My ceiling is 4k, so not in a position to buy various suits and plug-ins to mix+match the best bits.

I suppose it will probably boil down to FCPX + Smoke OR Avid Symphony + AE ?

Any advice on which combo you guys recommend would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I guess it depends on the type of work you do. Film, broadcast, corporate, weddings, etc. FCPX and Avid are pretty different approaches to editing. Do you sit with clients in the room who demand seeing a things in realtime? Do you have the storage and infrastructure to support a Smoke work station?

If you're looking at AE why not just get the Adobe Production Premium suite which will give you a NLE (Premiere Pro), color correction app (SpeedGrade or get Davinci Resolve Lite for free), and motion graphics/compositing app (After Effects)? If you still need more you'll have $2K+ left to spend on whatever else you may need/want.

Just my $.02

Well asking this in a Smoke forum... people might say Smoke is the best choice. :)

I have been an editor on Smoke for 8+ years.
I mainly do broadcast spot work... commercials and promos. Fast turn around, 8 hr edits.

Here is my reel.... everything done in Smoke in about a day or 2, Only the 3D 13 logo was not done in Smoke. All other 3D was.

hummm....

Maybe

lightworks + Resolve lite
or
MC + Fusion + Baselight
or
PP suite

Smack2013 seems pretty much a disaster so far
