It outputs to the timeline... replacing the clip that you added the CFX to. You can not output to the desktop.

thanks for your reply ... i thought this was the case .. so this limits smokes workflow : ( if you are for example using the thumbnail page to build a composite to use in the edit i.e. a fg and matte pass

also if you are replacing a clip in the time line is there a way to keep the original layer and the cfx layer becomes a new video layer ... what work flow would you use if you wanted two or three vers to show?
thanks again

[simon brewster] "also if you are replacing a clip in the time line is there a way to keep the original layer and the cfx layer becomes a new video layer ... what work flow would you use if you wanted two or three vers to show?"

Not sure what you are asking. You can add a CFX to a GAP above a clip and it will use that clip as background and the CFX will act like an adjustment layer. Be it a very complex one.

You can then mute this layer and create a newer version above that.

Or create a new VERSION track and make your changes there.

Simon,
To add to what Brian has posted when you select a clip in the timeline and in the tools ribbon before you click Create Connect FX enable the Generate Adjustment Segment and Smoke will automatically create a Gap effect above the selected clip. Then if you want multiple versions you can copy and paste the gap effect above the original clip to as many video layers you want and enable and disable as needed or use the layer versioning options.
